Australian Welding Solutions is proud to announce the commencement of a new training course for unattended boiler operators.
What is an ‘Unattended’ Boiler?
For the uninitiated, working out what unattended boiler operator training may involve is likely to be a little difficult. Showing someone how to boil a kettle may spring to mind or how to cook a boiler chicken. But, of course, we’re talking about the boilers that are used in industry to generate steam or other vapours and the safe operation of this equipment is obviously very important.
So, what exactly is an unattended boiler? In simple terms, it’s a boiler that is designed to operate automatically and has fail-safe features installed. While these boilers can be left ‘unattended’ for long periods of time, they still require regular checks by a competent, trained person. And that’s where the unattended boiler operator training comes to the fore.
Why is unattended boiler operator training important?
Unattended boiler operator training is important for industries that have boilers that can be left unattended for periods of time. While these boilers are generally very safe, without maintenance and regular inspection they may not work correctly and can pose significant health and safety risks. For example, if scale formation is allowed to build up, hot spots can occur inside the boiler with an explosion a very real possibility.
In addition, there are legal obligations involved. For example, in South Australia, if WorkSafe SA inspect a worksite and discover an unattended boiler being operated without a suitably trained and competent boiler operator, penalties under the Work Health and Safety Act 212 (SA) may occur. In the case of an incident – particularly where injury or death occurs – the penalty may include prosecution.
What does the training involve?
The unattended boiler operator training provided by Australian Welding Solutions is designed for people who have the responsibility to monitor unattended boilers. It will provide all the necessary learning operators require to safely monitor boilers and satisfy legal requirements. It is suitable for operators in all states and territories of Australia.
The training, including competency assessment, is presented entirely online, so can be completed by those people in states or territories where COVID-19 restrictions don’t allow face-to-face study and/or travel. In addition, the unattended boiler operator training can be completed at a student’s own pace.
The course is structured into five modules. As each module is completed, it is assessed, then the next module is provided to the student. A certificate of competency is provided on the successful completion of the training.
