Engineers, Project Managers, Procurement Leads and even Business Development Managers at one point in their career will come into contact, in a professional context with a critical safety structure that is welded.

Whether that is sourcing a supplier for material that is going to be used in critical plant piping or setting up the contract auditing conditions for handrails in a fire escape that is being installed in a new shopping complex – these are welded structures. Having an understanding of what “welding” involves, but more importantly the systems that have been codified to ensure that these structures can welded with minimal risk to the integrity of the asset is essential to secure the profitability of the undertaking.

Critical Structures – Integrating Triple Redundancy into a Safety Management Systems

At the end of the day, most experienced Welding Engineers will tell you that they approach a welded ligament as the weakest link in structure. This 3-part course aims to give participants not only a forum to explore the Science behind this proposition, but the opportunity to get out onto the workshop floor and “burn some rod” and prove it to themselves.

The fabrication experience is an invaluable opportunity for the professionals to gain substantial exposure to practical welding and non-destructive testing. This allows the participant to expand their practical understanding and physically see how, if applied correctly the welding codes (Australian and International) incorporate a triple redundancy into the fabrication process.

The Science and Practical Elements are then integrated and discussed in under a Command and Control framework. The key questions that is answered is: How do we control quality, minimise risk and maximise profitability by harnessing efficiency. The conversation is governed by understanding the principles of ISO 3834 and the participants learn how to roll out and audit Weld Quality System (QMS) and Safety Management Systems (SMS).

On completion of the course candidates will have gained:

  • An understanding of the fundamentals of arc welding and the “trifecta” principle governing weld integrity.
  • An overview of “Dirty, Clean and Ultra Clean Welding”- and their application in the Australian context.
  • The ability to identify key welding defects
  • An appreciation for code limitations for the import and export markets

The course is delivered in a 3-day and 5-day format. The principal difference between the investments is the time spent on the workshop floor and the number of case studies covered.

    Students may be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including covered footwear (steel capped boots preferred), Hi-Visibility long sleeve shirt, long pants, ear and eye protection, and a welding Helmet. Attendees who do not comply with the required dress code may be refused admission to course. AWS staff will advise students when PPE is required. AWS CE Instructors reserve the right to suspend from training courses participants who are disruptive or unsafe. Courses will commence at the listed time. If an attendee is running late they are to contact the AWS CE instructor to notify of expected time of arrival.
