Chairman of the Playford Trust, the Hon. Dean Brown AO recently met with AWS to discuss support for engineering scholarships and awards for women in welding engineering.
Recently AWS was recognised for its mentorship role for several STEM interns at the Defence and STEM Scholarship award night. Following these awards, former SA Premier the Hon. Dean Brown visited AWS’s facilities in Melrose Park.
This meeting outlined AWS’ plan to sponsor an award for high-achieving women in engineering in collaboration with Engineers Australia and possibly the Playford Trust.
It’s no secret that women are underrepresented in the field of welding engineering, and the team at AWS wants to provide more opportunities for women interested in this field by offering a sponsored position in AWS’ Inspection or Welding courses.
The Hon. Dean Brown who has considerable experience with STEM scholarships through his work with the Playford Trust, expressed his interest in such a program and the sponsorship discussions are progressing well.
Mr Brown also toured AWS’ recently upgraded welding training space and viewed AWS’ UAV Inspection technology with its related 3D modelling with Chief Pilot Garth Heard.
The Drones supplement AWS current pressure vessel compliance inspections, by providing faster, lower risk inspections. 3D modelling provides virtual viewing of the survey and provides a versatile permanent record for inspections.
